How much can I expect to spend on a family photographer?

Question by isabelledustylo: How much can I expect to spend on a family photographer?
My sister and I are trying to find a good photographer to do a family photo shoot for our parents for Christmas. How much is reasonable to expect to pay for one sitting, only one outfit (no changes), maybe 5 or 6 poses selected to print? Or even better, just a CD with poses that we can print later.

Well it depends how many people there are going to be. If its just you 2, that shouldn’t be too unreasonable. If you both have families, I’d be really cautious using someone who is really cheap. Big groups require a lot of patience, a lot of light, a good place to set everyone up, a photographer who can keep some kids attention… it’s about the maximum level of my skills. If you find a studio to do it, it will likely be a couple hundred bucks with a few prints. So much of it has to do with how many people you have and their ages. You very likely won’t get a CD from a studio though without putting up some serious money. Prints won’t be cheap either, but you won’t have to remortgage or anything.
If you find someone on the upper amateur scale, you might very well be able to negotiate something with a CD and still get some reasonable prints done. Just don’t jump at the first guy on Craigslist. Consult a few, get some references, see some of their gallery. Do NOT settle for the lowest bidder just because he’s lowest. If he seems to do good work, knows what he wants to do with the family and seems to have an understanding about what you’re looking for and is confident, AND he’s the lowest bidder, why not? But don’t decide strictly on price or its bound to end up bad. Good Luck.
